Border British Blue Club visit to Solway View
On Wednesday 3rd March 2010 the Border British Blue club were guests of Kevin Watret and family at Maulscastle Farm, Annan to view their renowned Solway View herd of British Blues.
Over 75 breeders and exponents of the breed turned out on a cold March evening for the tour, which began with Broomfield Vivien and Solway View Black Beauty, the mother and daughter team that have taken top honours at the last two Highland Shows respectfully, the first time that daughter has followed mother as breed champion at the Edinburgh venue.
We were treated to an outstanding display of progeny from the two main brood cows as well as other show winning youngstock that left many virtually speechless at the overall quality and level of stockmanship from this very tight and polished team. It will undoubtedly be the talk of the farming community for months to come.
Kevin along with stocksmen Ali Jackson and Lee Maxwell had been very busy readying stock for our visit, with cattle and farm in top condition.
The BBQ’s lit up and we all had British Blue steaks and burgers along with John Bells secret soup recipe, a fitting feast fit for a king served with style by Kevin’s wife Lesley and Jo Wilkinson.
Galloway Macleod who supply the Solway View herd with their feed were also on hand to give us a talk about the performance feeding regime and what makes their product one to be considered for the top end show cattle.
Andy Ryder then gave us all a clipping demonstration, transforming a young bull in a matter of minutes. He made this fine art look easy but hopefully we can emulate some of his advice with our own cattle.
A fabulous and full evening and our thanks go to the full team.
